LA VIRGEN DE LA SALUD IN ÁLIVA The hermitage of the "Virgen de la Salud" is placed in the pasture lands of Aliva, in the Central Massif of Picos de Europa. Their fiesta, which takes place on the 2nd of July every year, has been declared of Regional Tourist Interest since its 1998 celebration. The municipality´s neighbours in Camaleño turn up from all the villages to the hermitage, in order to worship the Virgin, image to which they have great devotion.
On the 25th of September of 1653 Miguel de Estrada was given the power of general governor in the Valley, so that he ordered the carving of an image of San Pedro to place it in the hermitage, as well as putting lockers on the doors and fixing the building roofs. In 1845 the hermitage continued under the name of San Pedro and people kept going to mass on the 1st of August. In 1966, an ordinance was approved by the city council of Camaleño, which said that being the hermitage reconstructed by the power granted to the valley´s solicitor in 1653, and continuing with tradition, a fiesta would be celebrated on the 2nd of July every year, under the name of Nuestra Señora de la Salud, in which the greater mass would be said for the spiritual health of the whole valley and its material prosperity.

In the old days, there used to be a hermitage
under the name of San Pedro in this place, of which we know by means
of the 1647 Ordinances of the mountain pastures of Aliva. In such document
there is an order to make the hermitage of San Pedro in the montain
pastures of Aliva, and that the work was carried out by the stone-mason
master, Mateo de Villa. The neighbours all collaborated in the construction
works, as the job was paid by the valley itself. It was also ordered
that starting from the day of San Pedro, 1st of August, a mass would
be celebrated. Equally, it was agrred, that the third part of the penalties
imposed for not obeying the Ordinances where given for the hermitage
building and repairing works.
The fiesta has acquired more and more
popularity each year and hundreds of devote people go up to the pastures
of Aliva each 2nd of July, where, a procession mass with the Virgin
takes place as well as praying the "Salve". The fiesta continues
with country food, horse racing and the races of "La Rosca",
competition in which a stick with a tasty "rosquilla" (sweet)
is given to the winners. All the acts are livened up with traditional
music. At dusk there is an open-air dance, down at the village of Espinama.
