As a natural refuge, Liébana
sheltered the primitive settlements, the Cantabrians, who refused to
be dominated by the Romans. Here, starts a long history in events and
transcendental facts. Safe and sound from the Arab incursions after
the Iberian Peninsula invasion, in the VIII century, the territory repopulation
was quick and the clergy played an important role as along the High
Middle Ages they found rest and a way of life all around the district.
The feudal fights between the houses of the Mendozas and
Manriques was finished by the middle of the XV century, when Diego Hurtado
de Mendoza, the Marquis of Santillana son, received the title of Duke
of the Infantado, given by the Spanish Catholic Monarchs. The great
domain of the Dukedom, in spite of the continuous resistance of the
"lebaniegos", was prolonged until the XIX century.
