The municipality of Camaleño
is made up of 33 populated areas, villages and districts, within which,
the following are representative: Turieno, Espinama, Pido, Pembes, Mogrovejo,
and Lon.
It is the most western municipality in Liébana, bordering with
León to the south-west, and to the west with the Principado de
Asturias, separated by the Picos de Europa mountains. The river Deva
flows through the municipality west to east, shaping an impressive valley.
It is very mountainous, with heights over 2,000 m.
The mixed livestock and the harvesting of potatoes, legumes and vineyards,
mainly, are the local traditional economic activities, now reinforced
by the important tourist development of the last years. Tourism counts
with two important attractions: The cable car in Fuente Dé, in
Picos de Europa, and the monastery of Santo Toribio.
Within its monuments, it´s worth highlighting the already mentioned
monastery of Santo Toribio, where the Beato de Liébana (famous
monk), lived and died, and where the Lignum Crucis is preserved. It´s
also worth mentioning the ancient houses of Cosgaya, Espinama and Turieno
and the mediaeval tower of Mogrovejo.
