Liébana has a surface of 556.3 km2 and a total population, nowadays, of 5,975 inhabitants. There are great population differences within the regional municipalities. From 60 inhabitants obtained in the last census of Tresviso to the 1,579 who are officially resident in Potes which is the administrative centre of Liébana and head of the region. Demographically, the region is on a decline; however less rapidly than during the 60s and 70s; although this is not the case of its floating population. Tourism has increased dizzily during the last decade, as well as the purchase of holiday houses. |

The district of Liébana
is made up of seven municipalities, located in the four valleys which
converge in Potes. Placed on the south west of Cantabria, it borders
with the province of Asturias and the provinces of Castilla León
and Palencia.
